Eighteen-year-old Syrian refugee Naji Aldabaan became the man of the house at the age of 10 after his father was imprisoned and tortured by the Syrian military for 40 days. During that time, Naji left his house only to buy bread for his family. He watched a woman get shot and killed before his eyes. As bombs fell in his neighborhood, Naji’s family walked for hours in the cold night to seek refuge in Jordan.
Being displaced from his home brought many new challenges. Naji’s family spent years living in a flooded basement, unable to work or attend school. But during that time, Naji never stopped dreaming of a successful future.
Naji shared his story with over 200 supporters of Refuge Action Fund at our benefit in New York City. His strength and poise inspire us deeply. Please take a few minutes to listen to his story.
Today, Naji no longer lives in acute danger. But his journey is not over. He and his family are working hard to rebuild their lives and own a home again. Naji goes to school and has a job to support his brothers and sisters. He is realizing his dreams for his future.
Naji is one of millions of refugees who deserve our compassion, financial support and a welcoming policy environment. That’s why Refugee Action Fund is committed to increasing philanthropic giving to ensure that all refugees have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
